The opening Australian Superbike race at The Bend Motorsport Park has proven to be a difficult end to the day for the Maxima BMW team.
Following a positive qualifying for both Glenn Allerton and Ted Collin, things unfortunately didn’t go to plan for Allerton.
By no fault of his own, Allerton was involved in an incident at turn one with another rider.
Allerton had a solid start off the line, however a fallen rider in front of him on the exit of turn three saw Allerton having no where to go. Allerton couldn’t avoid the bike at all and in his mind, he was going to attempt to jump it. However, as soon as Allerton hit the other bike, he said “that it was like hitting a curb” which catapulted him over the #14 Maxima BMW S 1000RR machine.
The accident has caused Allerton to break his right wrist. As expected, the three times Australian Superbike Champion is gutted about what happened. he is in reasonable spirits.
Collins was left to fly the flag for the Victorian based team, which saw the 19-year-old finishing in thirteenth place.
It proved to be a tough race for Collins as on the re-started part of the race the rear tyre just went off straight away, which saw him having trouble basically from the first lap onwards.
“I was just unable to ride the way which I would have liked to. We’ll make some changes to the Maxima BMW S 1000RR and hopefully that will fix some of the issues we had in the race,” explained Collins after the race.
“Tomorrow Is a new day and I’ll do my best to come out faster tomorrow. A big thanks to the Maxima BMW team for all their hard work today. On top of that, I hope Glenn is okay after his crash which he had,” concluded Collins.
Maxima BMW’s Team Manager Wayne Hepburn expressed that while Allerton has broken his wrist, the most important thing is that Allerton didn’t get seriously hurt.
“It has been declared that Glenn has broken his wrist due to the crash, which is very unfortunate. Glenn was doing really well and the whole team is just gutted, as he has had a bit of a rough trot over the last few years with injuries.”
Hepburn said that Allerton was feeling good ahead of the race, as had improved in every session before the lights went out this afternoon. So, for Allerton to have that crash has been a setback for everyone involved.
